Chicago Dormitory | VRChat download

The dorm as viewed in VRChat.

While attending Columbia College Chicago, one of our projects for a 3D modelling class was to model a small scene from scratch. I chose to model out my dorm room to scale, both as a familiar scene that I could get a lot of practice making, but also because I wanted a virtual memento of my time living in Chicago.

As a to-scale space, I converted it to work as a VRChat room. Because I took extra care to optimise the geometry of the room and furniture, it performed very well in-game.
Everything in-scene except for some diffuse maps were made from scratch. My main workflow for the normal maps in the scene was using GIMP's heightmap to normalmap feature to create some simple wood grain and fabric normalmaps. I created some textures entirely from scratch, usually using noise generation to create the brushed metal on various fixtures.

Some comparison shots of pictures of my dorm room and renders of the virtual one.
